Lathes frequently need something to hold your work steady somewhere in the middle. This may be because you are working on the end, or as here, the work is sufficiently flexible that it will flop around if not supported.

While the rests are adjustable somewhat, larger lathes often have several steadies of different sizes to accommodate varying needs.

The follow rest actually bolts to the back of the carriage and will travel with the work. This follow rest is unique in that it has a place for its own cutter.
