| Planting bar |
A planting bar is like a very strong spade. (The shovel part of this one is nearly an inch thick at its thickest.) Some forests grow back so thickly after being cut that they have to be thinned, but others may be planted to speed up the new crop, or to introduce superior trees. In that case, hard or gravelly soils need holes made for the roots of the new seedlings, and that's the job of the planting bar.
