The Stick

Loggers may buy standing trees ("stumpage") and sell the logs, or contract to cut stumpage owned by others. Either way, it's important to know how much wood is cut. Foresters use cruising sticks (and other tools) to estimate how much wood is in a forest, and scalers use log rules to measure the logs and estimate how much lumber the sawmill will get out of them.
