Oceanspray is the locally common name for this, but Cream bush and Ironwood are also applied. This locally abundant shrub may grow 20 feet tall, and often has many stems. During the winter the plant is inconspicious shrubby, but in mid summer it produces first white buds and and then white or cream colored flowers which though very mall are also very numerous in clusters on the ends of the branches. They remain for an extended time. The ironwood name is attributed to the fact that the wood is very strong and straight and widely used on a historical basis for shanks of arrows. Reportedly it could be fire hardened as well.
