The blackcap is a native plant similar to the Raspberry. The berries are good eating, but do not keep well. The berry is quite round (hemispheric) and turns black or at least deep purple when ripe. It is similar to a number of domesticated cultivars.
Often found in disturbed open areas such as after a fire or logging operation in middle to lower elevations. The berry that is black is ripe and ready to eat. It is quite tasty picked and eaten fresh.
