|Cat 324D with Denharco stroker|
The alternative to a dangle head processor such as the Keto that we use is a stroke delimber. The knives and saws can move in and out while attached to a 40 foot rail. This type of delimber has some advantanges in that it is not dependent on a measuring wheel to determine the length of the log. The obvious down side of them is that they don't work in confined spaces with a 40 foot rail advancing and retreating on a machine that swings. They need a lot of space to safely operate. This does not include thinning operations where there may be standing trees on some side of the machine, nor does it incude yarder sides where there are guywires in the work area which support the yarder. Since we work in confined spaces doing both thinning and yarder work, I've never considered having one of these machines around, thus photos of one taken at a trade show. That said, it's my impression that they work quite well when a suitably large open area is available for their operation.
