The Hairy Woodpecker is a modest sized bird (9" long) mostly black and white, but the Male has some red on its head. My bird book says red is on the back of the head as with picures 4 and 5 (of the bird on the stump), however, the photos of the woodpecker on the Elderberry (first 3) were taken in the same area a couple of weeks apart. Clearly the red is in a different location. It's an unsolved mystery.
